JOB TITLE: FRONT DESK STAFF, DMC LAB

DESCRIPTION:

The JHU Digital Media Center seeks outgoing, organized, detail oriented students to staff the front desk of the DMC lab. The job entails checking loaned equipment in and out of the lab, assisting lab patrons, and basic lab monitoring such as routine maintenance of computers and printers.

Interested applicants need not have any special experience or knowledge of computers or digital equipment, but must be willing and able to quickly learn both standard lab procedures and the DMCÕs inventory control system. During some hours, lab patronsÕ specific technical questions can be referred to specialized lab staff, but there will be times the Front Desk staff are on duty alone. Front Desk staff will need to provide excellent customer service, by answering rudimentary technical questions and referring patrons to additional resources. DMC staff are expected to learn new skills by attending training sessions and DMC workshops during the year.

Successful applicants will need to be available 6-12 hours per week, generally in two or three 3-4 hour shifts. The lab is staffed by Front Desk staff noon-midnight Sunday ‹Thursday and noon-10:00 pm Friday and Saturday.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Computer skills to include basic troubleshooting and operation
  • Experience using printers and scanners
  • Experience with downloading and uploading various file types to and from various storage media
  • Outgoing demeanor
  • Willingness and ability to learn lab monitoring techniques

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Experience with sales or customer service
  • Experience with computer oriented graphic design, digital video or digital audio equipment, software and techniques
  • Knowledge of different ways to output material including VHS, CD, DVD, and web based delivery
  • Knowledge of web design and implementation

COMPENSATION:

Starting salary is $6.50 per hour, with increases based upon experience, merit, longevity and additional training. DMC staff also receive 24-hour access to the lab and resources.
