JOB TITLE: Lab Coach, DMC LAB
DESCRIPTION:
The JHU Digital Media Center seeks outgoing, organized, detail oriented students to assist lab patrons in the creative use of hardware and software. While technical skills are important, the ability to inspire and teach others is paramount. The job entails proactive assisting of patrons with their projects, teaching new skills to patrons and fellow staff members, and special projects. Lab coaches are also expected to fill-in for front-desk duty (checking loaned equipment in and out of the lab, assisting lab patrons, and basic lab monitoring such as routine maintenance of computers and printers) as needed.
Interested applicants should have a working knowledge of most of the software and hardware listed in one of these categories and a willingness to learn programs they do not know. All DMC staff are expected to learn new skills by attending training sessions and DMC workshops during the year. Successful applicants will need to be available 6-12 hours per week, generally in two or three 3-4 hour shifts.
Video: Premiere, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, 1 and 3 chip digital video cameras, microphones, lights, outputting video in a variety of media, video production process.
Audio: Digital Performer, Bias Peak, Max/MSP, audio mixers, DAT recorder, familiarity with DMC Audio Studio, microphones and basic audio recording processes and techniques.
Web/Internet: Dreamweaver, Flash, Cold Fusion, Max/MSPĂ• Photoshop, scanners, digital still cameras, server upload
3/D, animation: 3D studio, Flash, Photoshop, Scanners, Wacom tablet
Graphics: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Wacom tablet, scanners, printers, digital still cameras.
PREREQUISITES:
Working knowledge of at least two of the software and two of the equipment items listed in a skill category above
PREFERRED SKILLS:
Working knowledge of most or all of the software equipment items listed in a skill category above
Experience with sales or customer service
Knowledge of different ways to output material including VHS, CD, DVD, and web based delivery
COMPENSATION: Starting salary is $7.50 per hour, with increases based upon experience, merit, longevity and additional training. DMC staff also receive 24-hour access to the lab and resources.
