JHUniverse Background

Since its founding in February 1994, JHUniverse has served Johns Hopkins as the World Wide Web access point for information for prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the local, national and international communities.

The JHUniverse Server

The original JHUniverse system <www.jhu.edu> was a Silicon Graphics Indigo Server. It was replaced in December 1997 by a SGI Origin 200 running Netscape Enterprise Server. This system had one 180MHz R10000 MIPS processor, 832MB of RAM, and mirrored 36GB drives. In July 2003, the JHUniverse server was replaced yet again by a Dell PowerEdge with Dual P4 Xeon 2.8GHz processors, 3GB of RAM, and 300GB of user disk space. The operating system is Linux and the web server is Apache 2

In early 2001, the principle pages which comprise the primary content of the JHUniverse site were moved to a Dell Poweredge 4350 server <webapps.jhu.edu/jhuniverse/> with dual Pentium III 600 MHz processors, 1 GB RAM, and 3x18 GB SCSI hard drives. Its operating system is Microsoft 2000 Advanced Server, and the Web server is Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS). Other server packages running include Allaire/ Macromedia ColdFusion and Microsoft SQL Server.

Note: The JHUniverse homepage resides on the <www.jhu.edu> server as do the individual division, department, and affiliate websites.

The Look and Feel of JHUniverse

JHUniverse has undergone several iterations over the years since its humble beginnings as a "CWIS" or campus-wide information system running on a gopher server. Read about the evolution of the JHUniverse website in the online editions of The Gazette and Johns Hopkins Magazine.
