Bernard T. "Bernie" Ferrari, an accomplished corporate strategist and management consultant to Fortune 50 companies, became the second dean of The Johns Hopkins University's Carey Business School on July 1, 2012.
Ferrari is a former director of the global management consulting firm McKinsey & Co. He spent nearly two decades as a partner and senior healthcare consultant there, leading the firm's healthcare practice and its North American corporate strategy practice. After retiring from McKinsey in 2008, he founded the Ferrari Consultancy, consulting on business strategy for clients in the financial services, transportation, energy, medical products, aviation and heavy equipment manufacturing sectors.
Ferrari is dean of a school that opened in 2007 and, building on earlier part-time Johns Hopkins business programs, offered the university's first MBA for full-time students starting in 2010. Its offerings include joint degree programs with other Johns Hopkins schools, partnerships that were instrumental in bringing Ferrari, who holds medical and law degrees in addition to his MBA, to Johns Hopkins.
Ferrari is a former surgeon who, prior to joining McKinsey, was chief operating officer and assistant medical director of the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans. He had previously served as vice chairman of colon and rectal surgery there.
His papers have been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine. His book, Power Listening: Mastering the Most Critical Business Skill of All, was published in 2012.
Ferrari has been a trustee of the University of Rochester and the Juilliard School and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a cum laude graduate of the University of Rochester, where he also received his MD. He earned a JD magna cum laude from Loyola University School of Law and an MBA from Tulane University School of Business.
