Charlene Moore Hayes became vice president for human resources at The Johns Hopkins University in November 2003 after serving for nearly 20 years as a human resources professional elsewhere.

Hayes had been North Carolina State's associate vice chancellor for human resources, the university chief human resources officer, since January 2000. She previously worked for nine years at Purdue University, where she held a series of increasingly responsible positions before becoming director of personnel services, the university's chief personnel officer. She began her human resources career in 1984 as a labor/employee relations specialist in Maryland's Montgomery County government.

Hayes' priorities include continuing to promote the university's initiatives on institutional diversity and contributing to the effort of the Johns Hopkins Institutions -- the university and the health system together -- to design and execute HopkinsOne, an enterprise-wide business systems project.

Hayes grew up in Holly Springs, Miss. A 1978 graduate of Cornell University, where she majored in Africana studies, she earned a law degree in 1984 from George Washington University.
