James J. Zeller Jr. became the university's vice provost
for budgets and planning in July 2006 after serving as
associate provost since December 1999. Previously, he had
been associate dean for administration at the university's
Peabody Institute since 1983.
Zeller's responsibilities include involvement in the annual
budget process and in planning academic building projects.
He is also involved in coordination of the university's
academic and cultural centers, such as the Eisenhower
Library, the Johns Hopkins University Press, the Institute
for Policy Studies and the Center for Talented Youth.
As associate dean under Peabody directors Robert Pierce and
Robert Sirota, Zeller was responsible for strategic
planning and for managing a $22 million budget and a $53
million endowment. He had oversight of human resources,
information technology and other non-academic areas at the
institute.
Prior to his appointment at Peabody, Zeller was director of
finance and assistant to the vice president for
administration at the Community College of Baltimore. He
was also a budget and management analyst in the Finance
Department of the City of Baltimore
Zeller is a 1971 graduate of what was then known as Towson
State College (now Towson University) and earned a master
of policy science degree from the University of Maryland,
Baltimore County, in 1980. He has also done graduate work
in business at Johns Hopkins.
