James J. Zeller Jr. became the university's vice provost for budgets and planning in July 2006 after serving as associate provost since December 1999. Previously, he had been associate dean for administration at the university's Peabody Institute since 1983.

Zeller's responsibilities include involvement in the annual budget process and in planning academic building projects. He is also involved in coordination of the university's academic and cultural centers, such as the Eisenhower Library, the Johns Hopkins University Press, the Institute for Policy Studies and the Center for Talented Youth.

As associate dean under Peabody directors Robert Pierce and Robert Sirota, Zeller was responsible for strategic planning and for managing a $22 million budget and a $53 million endowment. He had oversight of human resources, information technology and other non-academic areas at the institute.

Prior to his appointment at Peabody, Zeller was director of finance and assistant to the vice president for administration at the Community College of Baltimore. He was also a budget and management analyst in the Finance Department of the City of Baltimore

Zeller is a 1971 graduate of what was then known as Towson State College (now Towson University) and earned a master of policy science degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in 1980. He has also done graduate work in business at Johns Hopkins.
