Lois Chiang joined Johns Hopkins as Senior Adviser to the President in March 2009.
In this role, Chiang advises the president on all strategic priorities and initiatives, financial and budgetary matters, legal and policy issues, strategic and crisis communications, and governance issues. She works closely with deans, vice presidents, trustees, and others at the university facilitating and supporting executive decision-making, advancing and assessing priority initiatives, and recruiting senior leadership.
Prior to Johns Hopkins, Chiang served as Chief of Staff to the Provost at the University of Pennsylvania where she oversaw the planning and implementation of key institutional initiatives, international efforts, as well as the day-to-day management of the Office of the Provost. She was previously Assistant Dean of Students for the Juris Doctor Program at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, responsible for academic programs, admissions, financial aid, international initiatives, the International Human Rights Clinic, community outreach and student affairs and discipline.
Prior to entering higher education, Chiang practiced corporate law at the Canadian law firm, Stikeman Elliott LLP, while juggling pro bono work on issues related to women and law in China, trafficking in women and gender issues in the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. She holds a BA from the University of Toronto, MA from Yale University and a JD from the University of Toronto.
