Michael C. Eicher, at Johns Hopkins since 2006 as vice president for development and alumni relations, was promoted in October 2010 to the newly created position of senior vice president for external affairs and development.
In his new role, he retains overall responsibility for attracting private financial support for the university and Johns Hopkins Medicine and for strengthening Johns Hopkins' relationships with alumni and other supporters. He also assumes responsibility for the Office of Communications and Public Affairs, which tells the Johns Hopkins story to audiences on and off campus, through traditional and new media, in print, on video and online.
Reporting to Eicher are the vice presidents for development and alumni relations at the university and the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and the vice president for communications.
When he joined Johns Hopkins, Eicher assumed leadership for the Johns Hopkins: Knowledge for the World campaign, which has been under way since 2000. That effort, which closed on Dec. 31, 2008, with commitments of more than $3.7 billion, focused on the critical unmet needs of the university and Johns Hopkins Medicine, including student aid and faculty support, construction of clinical buildings at the medical campus and important renovation projects such as the Homewood campus's Gilman Hall.
Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Eicher had been vice chancellor at the University of California, Los Angeles, since 1998 and had been with UCLA since 1986. He rose from associate director of development in the School of Medicine to deputy director and director, and from there to vice provost for medical science development, and assistant and associate vice chancellor. Campaign UCLA, a 10-year effort completed in 2005, raised $3.05 billion, then a record for U.S. universities, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Eicher graduated from the University of California, San Diego, in 1979.
