Ray Gillian became assistant provost and director of the
Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Programs
in April 2000. The office was renamed
the Office of Institutional Equity in April 2007 and Gillian
was, in turn, named Vice Provost for Institutional Equity.
He is the first director of a new office that brings
together and expands on the university's programs in
affirmative action, disability services and sexual
harassment prevention and resolution. He ensures that the
university complies with federal, state and local laws on
affirmative action and equal opportunity and directs the
university's efforts to promote institutional equality and a
diverse community.
Previously, as assistant to the president at the University
of Maryland, College Park, Gillian was responsible for 16
years for developing, monitoring and implementing the
university's equity and diversity procedures
Prior to becoming assistant to the president at Maryland, he
served from 1977 to 1984 as that university's director of
special student support services. Earlier, at East
Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania, he was director of
minority affairs and director of the Center for Educational
Opportunity, which provided services to educationally and
economically disadvantaged students.
Gillian graduated from Ohio State University in 1970 and
earned a master's degree there the following year.
