Sarah Steinberg became interim vice provost for student affairs in May 2011 after serving in the post on an interim basis since the previous July. She brought with her to the role more than 30 years of experience in higher education leadership, engineering consulting, marketing management and business strategy.

She oversees student life, enrollment and academic services on the university's Homewood campus.

Steinberg joined Johns Hopkins in 1993, serving for 11 years in the Whiting School of Engineering's Part-time Engineering Programs, rising from program director to executive director.

In late 2004, she moved to the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, where she served as senior associate dean for graduate professional programs and technology integration. She had academic and administrative responsibility for a program offering graduate degrees to part-time students in areas such as biotechnology, government, global security and environmental science.

Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Steinberg worked as a geotechnical engineering consultant for 15 years in Chicago and in northern Virginia. She has earned bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from Cornell University, an MBA with a concentration in marketing and finance from Northwestern University and a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania.
