CATHERINE IOLA AND J. SMITH MICHAEL DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORSHIP IN UROLOGY
Established in 1988 by Catherine Iola Michael in memory of her husband

J. SMITH MICHAEL was president and board chairman of the First National Bank of Aberdeen, later acquired by Equitable Trust Company. Mr. Michael died in 1978.

 

With his wife, CATHERINE IOLA MICHAEL, he was a generous donor to the Brady Urological Institute where he had been a patient. Both grew up in Harford County, Maryland, where Mrs. Michael was active in business and civic affairs. She served on the advisory board of the former Equitable Bank and was a charter member of the Liriodendron Foundation, a group dedicated to the restoration and preservation of old houses in the country.

 

DONALD S. COFFEY, the Catherine Iola and J. Smith Michael Distinguished Professor of Urology, has been at Hopkins since 1959 and serves on the faculties in the departments of pharmacology, molecular sciences, oncology and urology. Dr. Coffey has performed groundbreaking research on prostate cancer and has led the way in exploring the mechanisms that replicate DNA. He is a past president of the American Association for Cancer Research and the Society for Basic Urologic Research, and he was appointed to a six-year term as a member of the National Cancer Advisory Board by President George W. Bush in 2006.
