GROVE HAINES CHAIR (BOLOGNA CENTER)
Established in 1992 by Dorothy S. Haines in memory of her husband

GROVE HAINES, one of the most popular SAIS professors, was the founder and first director of the school's Bologna Center. Following his retirement in 1972, he received the Medal of Honor of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was similarly honored by the governments of Austria and Italy. Dr. Haines, who died in 1976, is remembered by colleagues for instilling in those at the Bologna Center a sense of purpose about their role after World War II in helping to rebuild the world and unite Europe. This was among the first chairs endowed at the Bologna Center.

His wife, DOROTHY S. HAINES, of Fairfax, California, remained interested in the Bologna Center. In addition to her monetary gifts, Mrs. Haines donated a large collection of books on travel and Italian culture to the university.
