JULIA G. LEVY, PH.D. PROFESSORSHIP IN OPHTHALMOLOGY
Established in 2004 with a gift made by QLT Inc. in honor of Julia G. Levy, Ph.D.

QLT INC., headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, is a global biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery, development, and commercialization of innovative therapies to treat eye diseases, cancer, and dermatology-related conditions. It is a recognized world leader in the emerging field of photodynamic therapy, a promising area of medicine that utilizes light-activated drugs to treat disease.

 

JULIA G. LEVY, PhD, co-founder of QLT Inc. in 1981, has served in several key senior posts including chief scientific officer and vice president, as well as president and CEO from 1995 to 2002. A fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and former president of the Canadian Federation of Biological Scientists, Dr. Levy has earned numerous awards and honors including an appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada and the Future of Vision Award from the Foundation Fighting Blindness in 2001. In 2003, she was presented with the Helen Keller Prize for Innovation in Eye Care.

 

SUSAN B. BRESSLER, Med 1982, the inaugural Julia G. Levy, Ph.D. Professor of Ophthalmology, has been a professor of ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute and the School of Medicine since 2000. In that year she was the inaugural recipient of the Neil R. Miller, M.D. Medical Student Teaching Award. Her main research interest is collaborative efforts in clinical trials, with specific emphasis on the treatment of choroidal neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Bressler has a large national and international referral practice at Wilmer and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles. She is an associate editor of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, and for over a decade served as the director and principal investigator of the Photograph Reading Center at Wilmer. In 2004, Dr. Bressler received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Achievement Award.
