S. RICHARD HIRSCH PROFESSORSHIP IN EUROPEAN STUDIES
Established in 2005 by Laurence E. Hirsch in honor of his father, S. Richard Hirsch

The S. Richard Hirsch Professorship in European Studies was established by his sons to honor Mr. Hirsch. S. RICHARD HIRSCH was a Transylvanian refugee who emigrated to the United States in the early 1920s. Despite his own lack of schooling, Richard Hirsch understood the critical importance of education. Furthering the study of Eastern Europe from an American perspective is a fitting tribute to the Old and New World influences that defined him.

LAURENCE E. HIRSCH, SAIS 2005 (MIPP), is a senior advisor at the Center for European Policy Analysis. Mr. Hirsch is also chairman of Eagle Materials, Inc., a producer of cement, gypsum wallboard, aggregates, and readymix concrete, and chairman of Highlander Partners, L.P., a private equity firm.

MITCHELL A. ORENSTEIN, the S. Richard Hirsch Professor of European Studies, joined the SAIS faculty in 2007. Dr. Orenstein is the author of three books, including Transnational Politics and the New Pension Reforms. In addition to serving as director of the Syracuse University Center for European Studies, he has taught political science at Brown and Yale universities, and served as a fellow at the Strengthening Democratic Institutions Project at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.
