Established in 1924 by the estate of Kate A. Stran in memory of her husband
THOMAS P. STRAN was highly successful in the wholesale lumber business in Cleveland, Ohio. After his death, his widow, KATE A. STRAN, created a memorial to her husband, first endowing the children's ward at Union Memorial Hospital and then making bequest provisions to endow this professorship. The first Stran Professor was W.W. Willoughby, founder of Hopkins' Political Science Department. He earned his profession's highest tribute, election to the presidency of the American Political Science Association. (Painting of scales of justice by Helen L. Smith.)
