Established in 1999 by Michael G. Callas
MICHAEL G. CALLAS, Engr 1943, 1947 (M.A.), was a structural engineer and a leader in his industry, in Maryland civic life, and at the Whiting School of Engineering. He joined the Whiting-Turner Construction Company following graduation from Hopkins and went on to found Callas Contractors Inc. in 1958. Mr. Callas was a member of the Whiting School's National Advisory Council and the Civil Engineering Visiting Committee. In 1992, the Alumni Association recognized his contributions to the University with the Heritage Award. Active in Western Maryland civic affairs, Mr. Callas was past president, regional director, chairman, and 1992 Volunteer of the Year of the Business-Education Partnership Committee in Washington County. He also served as national chapter president of the Association of Builders and Contractors. In 1998, Mr. Callas received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Boy Scouts of America, as well as a Maryland governor's citation for his years of community service and unwavering commitment to the young people of Maryland. He died in 2004.
